Leopold Aschenbrenner's hedge fund Situational Awareness, which made large leveraged bets on AI-related chipmakers, suffered steep losses and was forced to liquidate its public stock portfolio, bought by Citadel. The fund grew rapidly from $225 million in 2024 to as much as $45 billion in mid-2026 before collapsing due to a long-chips, short-software trade that went wrong amid market downturns.
