Google DeepMind developed SynthID watermarking technology for AI-generated images and extended it to text, open-sourcing SynthID Text. Anthropic plans to adopt SynthID Text for Claude models, while OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, Cohere, and xAI have varying levels of watermarking for images and audio but limited or no text watermarking. The EU AI Act's transparency rules effective August 2026 are driving adoption of machine-readable watermarks for AI-generated content.
