NVIDIA's Blackwell GPUs were initially claimed to reduce large language model inference costs and energy use by up to 25x, but recent case studies suggest the actual improvement is closer to 10x. Despite these gains, AI startups have not become profitable, and massive investments in generative AI by hyperscalers have yet to yield proportional new revenue. The overstated efficiency claims have gone largely unchallenged in the media, while the financial impact on the AI industry remains uncertain.
